How to Prepare for Your First Commercial Audition in Los Angeles

Commercial work is where most talent in Los Angeles starts making real money. Not film. Not TV. Commercials. National brand campaigns, regional spots, digital ads, social media content deals — this is the bread and butter of a working actor or model's income, and it is far more accessible than most people think. I'm Karon Cash, CEO of Wright Hands Management, and I've helped talent book commercial work with brands across multiple industries. Here is how you prepare.

KNOW WHAT TYPE OF COMMERCIAL TALENT YOU ARE. Commercial casting is very specific. Are you the young professional? The mom? The athlete? The girl next door? The distinguished businessman? Knowing your type is not limiting — it is strategic. Casting directors are filling a specific role and they need to see that you fit it in the first 10 seconds.

HAVE A COMMERCIAL HEADSHOT. Not a fashion headshot. Not a dramatic headshot. A commercial headshot — clean background, bright natural smile, approachable energy. If you don't have one, that is step one before anything else.

DRESS THE PART WITHOUT OVERDRESSING. Come in as the character but toned down. If you're auditioning for a bank commercial, come in business casual. If it's a fitness brand, come athletic but clean. No logos. No strong prints. Keep it simple so the casting director sees you, not your outfit.

SLATE CONFIDENTLY. A slate is when you say your name and sometimes your agency to the camera before your read. Stand up straight. Make direct eye contact with the lens. Say your name clearly. This is the first impression. Own it.

MAKE A CHOICE AND COMMIT. Commercial casting directors see hundreds of people. The talent that books is the talent that made a clear, specific choice and committed to it fully. Don't play it safe. Be memorable within the context of the role.

FOLLOW UP PROFESSIONALLY. After any audition, send a brief, professional thank-you to your manager or agent to confirm you attended. Keep records. Commercial auditions sometimes have callbacks months later.

Wright Hands Management actively places talent in commercial auditions across Los Angeles. We work with models, actors, and creatives who are commercially ready and serious about building a sustainable career.
